A stamp card is the oldest loyalty trick in retail: buy five coffees, get the sixth free. It works because it gives customers a small, visible reason to come back to you instead of the shop next door. The question for a small business today is whether to keep it on paper or move it to the customer's phone.
Why stamp cards work at all
A half-filled card is an unfinished task, and people like finishing tasks. Every stamp makes the reward feel closer, which nudges the next visit. The reward does not need to be big. It needs to be clear, reachable and something your customers actually want.
Paper punch card vs digital stamp card
| Paper card | Digital stamp card | |
|---|---|---|
| Customer keeps it | In a wallet, until it gets lost or washed | On their phone, opened from one scan |
| Stops fake stamps | Hard: stamps and pens can be copied | Time limit between stamps, optional owner approval |
| Reward handover | You check the card by eye | A live code you enter before handing over the reward |
| Change the reward | Reprint all cards | Edit it in a minute |
| Know your regulars | No record | A list of customers, visits and last visit |
| Bring back missing customers | Not possible | See who hasn't visited and send them a message |
| Cost | Printing and stamps | A monthly or yearly plan |
When paper is still fine
If you have a handful of regulars you know by name, a paper card and your memory may be enough. Paper also suits a one-off festival offer that ends in a week.
When digital clearly wins
- You have more customers than you can remember
- Cards keep getting lost and customers ask you to "count the old one"
- You want to know how many customers actually come back
- You want to remind customers who are close to a reward, or who have stopped coming
Setting rewards that work
- Keep the first reward close. Five visits works better than fifteen for most shops.
- Make it something you can afford. A free tea, a free add-on service or a small discount on the next bill.
- Add a bigger second reward for loyal customers, such as a free haircut after eight visits.
- Set an expiry so rewards are used, for example 30 days after they unlock.
How MyDigitCard Rewards does it
You print a counter QR. Customers scan it, enter their name and mobile once, and collect a stamp on every visit. You can also give coins on bills that they spend on rewards. When a reward unlocks, the customer shows a live code and you enter it before handing anything over.
